Vaccination recommendations for Uzbekistan

The Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccination is generally recommended for Girls aged 11-28.

Additionally Hepatitis A and Typhoid are generally recommended. It is of crucial importance to be aware that these vaccines do not substitute for good food hygiene. Typhoid vaccine is only 70% effective and there are other food borne diseases.

Other recommended vaccines:

We recommend these vaccines widely and if in doubt we suggest to vaccinate.

Meningococcal Vaccine:
Recommended for adults with a high number of social contacts at work, particularly teachers, health care workers, workers in orphanages, and others with frequent social contact.
For children we generally recommend this vaccine in Uzbekistan.

Influenza Vaccine:
With respect to the remote location our recommendation for Influenza vaccine exceeds the recommendations of most public health authorities in the western world.
We strongly recommend the vaccine for the following groups of persons:
  • Severe chronic diseases (for example: Asthma, cardiac diseases, diabetes)
  • Long term treatment with Aspirin
  • Pregnancy, second or third trimester
  • Age 50 years or higher
  • Children 6-24 months
  • Regular travel or residence outside Tashkent
  • High number of social contacts in the work place (high public traffic)
  • Household contacts of mentioned groups

Rabies vaccine:
Please remember that rabies is the single most deadly disease: there is no cure and any cancer has a much better prognosis.
Therefore we strongly recommend the vaccine for the following groups or persons:
  • Regular travel or residence outside Tashkent
  • Dog owners (even if the dog was vaccinated in Europe or USA, as dog owners occasionally are attacked by local dogs together with their dog)
  • Regular outdoor activities
  • Work or leisure contacts with animals (mammals) or in rural settings
  • All children residing in Uzbekistan, as dangers are much higher for children than for adults due to anatomical and behavioural factors

Limited Recommendation: Travel Vaccines unavailable in Central Asia

There is no risk of Yellow Fever or Japanese Encephalitis in Central Asia and tourists do not need a vaccine. However, it is impossible to get the standard vaccines, used in the West, anywhere in Central Asia for these 2 diseases.
Therefore long term residents should carefully review their travel plans and get all necessary special vaccines before arriving in Uzbekistan or during their next trip home.
The problem is particularly acute for Yellow Fever and too many people had to abandon their travel plans, or worse: traveled without this important vaccine to endemic areas.
